They are the same, in a sense. When she grows up, Leah will become like Mrs. Boyd, unless Leah herself or someone else changes that path. When Mrs. Boyd was a little girl, she was very much like Leah. They're two people inhabiting the same roll in their society.

Dark, dark, and absolutely grim. Poor Leah, and poor Mrs. Boyd. This is a quick dunk in the depths or human cruelty.

True. Not the kind of place you want to spend a lot of time in.

I've seen communities sacrifice a few people in this way to prevent upheaval and keep the majority happy. It's never a sign of a healthy group.
